My Sister, the Serial Killer is a thriller novel written by Nigerian author, Oyinkan Braithwaite. Although it was released in 2018, the book is still making it’s rounds and gaining popularity on social media platforms in 2023.
This story takes place in Lagoes, Nigeria and centers two sisters, Korede and Ayoola. Koede is a hard working nurse, who has always done her best to look after and protect her younger sister, who often finds herself in trouble. Ayoola, is the more “beautiful” and favored sister. Life has always come a bit easier to her because of her beauty, her figure, and because she has an older sister who will always clean up her messes whenever she calls. It isn’t until recently in the past few years that those messes, turned into murders.
The first time it happened, Ayoola swore up and down it was self-defense. Korede did what any sister would do, and helped her sister discard of the body and made sure this would never come to light. But after the second murder, and the third murder…..Korede started seeing a pattern. Not only was she finding herself wiping more and more blood off of floors and getting rid of bodies for her sister, but she saw a change in her sister’s behavior. No longer remorseful, her sister could kill a man and happily be snapping selfies for social media the next day.
It isn’t until Ayoola begins dating Korede’s long time crush, that Korede reaches her breaking point. She feels unappreciated by her sister and used. Not to mention, once again, Ayoola is getting everything she wants so easily, without having to face any of the consequences for her actions. Now she’s losing the man of her dreams to her sister who will more than likely hurt him, or worse, kill him.
This book was such an easy read! I read it in two days and literally could not put it down. Because I have my own sister, this book really put things into perspective for me on how often the “baby” of the family gets away with so much, and how much of a toll it can take on older siblings to constantly be burdened with protecting them with oftentimes no type of appreciation or gratitude returned.
This book was such a rollercoaster, and definitely one of my favorites. It was dark, scary at times and just downright shocking.
